Ἔλεγεν οὖν τοῖς ἐκπορευομένοις ὄχλοις βαπτισθῆναι ὑπ' αὐτοῦ· Γεννήματα ἐχιδνῶν, τίς ὑπέδειξεν ὑμῖν φυγεῖν ἀπὸ τῆς μελλούσης ὀργῆς;
Alle folle che andavano a farsi battezzare da lui, Giovanni diceva: «Razza di vipere, chi vi ha fatto credere di poter sfuggire all'ira imminente?
He said therefore to the crowdsⓘ who were coming out to be immersedⓘ by him: «Brood of vipersⓘ, who showed you how to flee from the wrath to comeⓘ?

ποιήσατε οὖν καρποὺς ἀξίους τῆς μετανοίας καὶ μὴ ἄρξησθε λέγειν ἐν ἑαυτοῖς· Πατέρα ἔχομεν τὸν Ἀβραάμ, λέγω γὰρ ὑμῖν ὅτι δύναται ὁ θεὸς ἐκ τῶν λίθων τούτων ἐγεῖραι τέκνα τῷ Ἀβραάμ.
Fate dunque frutti degni della conversione e non cominciate a dire fra voi: 'Abbiamo Abramo per padre!'. Perché io vi dico che da queste pietre Dio può suscitare figli ad Abramo.
Bear therefore fruits worthy of conversionⓘ, and do not begin to say within yourselvesⓘ: We have Abraham as fatherⓘ — for I tell youⓘ that Godⓘ is able, from these stonesⓘ, to raise up children to Abrahamⓘ.

ἤδη δὲ καὶ ἡ ἀξίνη πρὸς τὴν ῥίζαν τῶν δένδρων κεῖται· πᾶν οὖν δένδρον μὴ ποιοῦν καρπὸν καλὸν ἐκκόπτεται καὶ εἰς πῦρ βάλλεται.
Anzi, già la scure è posta alla radice degli alberi; perciò ogni albero che non dà buon frutto viene tagliato e gettato nel fuoco».
Alreadyⓘ even the axe is laid to the rootⓘ of the trees; every treeⓘ therefore that does not bear good fruitⓘ is cut down and cast into the fireⓘ».
