Καὶ ἐγένετο ἐν μιᾷ τῶν ἡμερῶν διδάσκοντος αὐτοῦ τὸν λαὸν ἐν τῷ ἱερῷ καὶ εὐαγγελιζομένου ἐπέστησαν οἱ ἀρχιερεῖς καὶ οἱ γραμματεῖς σὺν τοῖς πρεσβυτέροις
Un giorno, mentre istruiva il popolo nel tempio e annunciava il Vangelo, sopraggiunsero i capi dei sacerdoti e gli scribi con gli anziani
And it came to pass, on one of those days, while he was teaching the ⓘ in the ⓘ and was ⓘ, there came upon him the ⓘ and the ⓘ with the ⓘ — the official delegation of the Sanhedrin

καὶ εἶπαν λέγοντες πρὸς αὐτόν· Εἰπὸν ἡμῖν ἐν ποίᾳ ἐξουσίᾳ ταῦτα ποιεῖς, ἢ τίς ἐστιν ὁ δούς σοι τὴν ἐξουσίαν ταύτην;
e si rivolsero a lui dicendo: «Spiegaci con quale autorità fai queste cose o chi è che ti ha dato questa autorità».
and they said to him, speaking: «Tell us by what ⓘ, or who is he that gave you this authority?».

ἀποκριθεὶς δὲ εἶπεν πρὸς αὐτούς· Ἐρωτήσω ὑμᾶς κἀγὼ λόγον, καὶ εἴπατέ μοι·
E Gesù rispose loro: «Anch'io vi farò una domanda. Ditemi:
Answering he said to them: «I too will question you about a ⓘ, and tell me:

Τὸ βάπτισμα Ἰωάννου ἐξ οὐρανοῦ ἦν ἢ ἐξ ἀνθρώπων;
il battesimo di Giovanni veniva dal cielo o dagli uomini?».
was the ⓘ of John ⓘ?».

οἱ δὲ συνελογίσαντο πρὸς ἑαυτοὺς λέγοντες ὅτι Ἐὰν εἴπωμεν· Ἐξ οὐρανοῦ, ἐρεῖ· Διὰ τί οὐκ ἐπιστεύσατε αὐτῷ;
Allora essi ragionavano fra loro dicendo: «Se diciamo: 'Dal cielo', risponderà: 'Perché non gli avete creduto?'.
And they reasoned among themselves saying: «If we say: From heaven, he will say: Why did you not ⓘ him?

ἐὰν δὲ εἴπωμεν· Ἐξ ἀνθρώπων, ὁ λαὸς ἅπας καταλιθάσει ἡμᾶς, πεπεισμένος γάρ ἐστιν Ἰωάννην προφήτην εἶναι.
Se invece diciamo: 'Dagli uomini', tutto il popolo ci lapiderà, perché è convinto che Giovanni sia un profeta».
If instead we say: From men, all the people will ⓘ us, for it is persuaded that John was a ⓘ».

καὶ ἀπεκρίθησαν μὴ εἰδέναι πόθεν.
Risposero quindi di non saperlo.
And they answered that they did not ⓘ whence it came.

καὶ ὁ Ἰησοῦς εἶπεν αὐτοῖς· Οὐδὲ ἐγὼ λέγω ὑμῖν ἐν ποίᾳ ἐξουσίᾳ ταῦτα ποιῶ.
E Gesù disse loro: «Neanch'io vi dico con quale autorità faccio queste cose».
And Jesus said to them: «ⓘ tell you by what authority I do these things».
