Greekκαὶ εἶπεν ὁ νεώτερος αὐτῶν τῷ πατρί· Πάτερ, δός μοι τὸ ἐπιβάλλον μέρος τῆς οὐσίας. ὁ δὲ διεῖλεν αὐτοῖς τὸν βίον.
Orthodox ReadingAnd the younger of them said to the father: «Father, give me the share of the estateⓘ that falls to me». And he divided the livelihoodⓘ between them.

Greekκαὶ μετ' οὐ πολλὰς ἡμέρας συναγαγὼν πάντα ὁ νεώτερος υἱὸς ἀπεδήμησεν εἰς χώραν μακράν καὶ ἐκεῖ διεσκόρπισεν τὴν οὐσίαν αὐτοῦ ζῶν ἀσώτως.
Orthodox ReadingAnd not many days later, the younger son, having gathered everything, went off abroadⓘ into a distant regionⓘ and there he squandered his substance living dissolutelyⓘ.

Greekδαπανήσαντος δὲ αὐτοῦ πάντα ἐγένετο λιμὸς ἰσχυρὰ κατὰ τὴν χώραν ἐκείνην, καὶ αὐτὸς ἤρξατο ὑστερεῖσθαι.
Orthodox ReadingAnd when he had spent everything, there came aboutⓘ a great famine throughout that region, and he began to be in want.

Greekκαὶ πορευθεὶς ἐκολλήθη ἑνὶ τῶν πολιτῶν τῆς χώρας ἐκείνης, καὶ ἔπεμψεν αὐτὸν εἰς τοὺς ἀγροὺς αὐτοῦ βόσκειν χοίρους·
Orthodox ReadingAnd, going off, he attached himselfⓘ to one of the citizens of that region, who sent him into his fields to feed the swineⓘ.

Greekκαὶ ἐπεθύμει γεμίσαι τὴν κοιλίαν αὐτοῦ ἀπὸ τῶν κερατίων ὧν ἤσθιον οἱ χοῖροι, καὶ οὐδεὶς ἐδίδου αὐτῷ.
Orthodox ReadingAnd he longedⓘ to fill his belly with the carob podsⓘ that the swine were eating, and no one gave him any.

Greekεἰς ἑαυτὸν δὲ ἐλθὼν ἔφη· Πόσοι μίσθιοι τοῦ πατρός μου περισσεύονται ἄρτων, ἐγὼ δὲ λιμῷ ὧδε ἀπόλλυμαι.
Orthodox ReadingHaving come to himself and come to repentance-return (teshuvah)ⓘ he said: «How many hired handsⓘ of my father have bread in abundance, while I here am perishing of hunger!

Greekἀναστὰς πορεύσομαι πρὸς τὸν πατέρα μου καὶ ἐρῶ αὐτῷ· Πάτερ, ἥμαρτον εἰς τὸν οὐρανὸν καὶ ἐνώπιόν σου,

Greekοὐκέτι εἰμὶ ἄξιος κληθῆναι υἱός σου· ποίησόν με ὡς ἕνα τῶν μισθίων σου.
Orthodox ReadingI am no longer worthy to be called your son: treat me as one of your hired hands».

Greekκαὶ ἀναστὰς ἦλθεν πρὸς τὸν πατέρα ἑαυτοῦ. ἔτι δὲ αὐτοῦ μακρὰν ἀπέχοντος εἶδεν αὐτὸν ὁ πατὴρ αὐτοῦ καὶ ἐσπλαγχνίσθη καὶ δραμὼν ἐπέπεσεν ἐπὶ τὸν τράχηλον αὐτοῦ καὶ κατεφίλησεν αὐτόν.
Orthodox ReadingAnd, having arisen, he went to his own father. While he was still far off, his father saw him and was moved with compassion in his bowelsⓘ, and he ran, threw himself upon his neck and kissed himⓘ.

Greekεἶπεν δὲ ὁ υἱὸς αὐτῷ· Πάτερ, ἥμαρτον εἰς τὸν οὐρανὸν καὶ ἐνώπιόν σου, οὐκέτι εἰμὶ ἄξιος κληθῆναι υἱός σου.
Orthodox ReadingAnd the son said to him: «Father, I have sinned against Heaven and before you; I am no longer worthy to be called your son».

Greekεἶπεν δὲ ὁ πατὴρ πρὸς τοὺς δούλους αὐτοῦ· Ταχὺ ἐξενέγκατε στολὴν τὴν πρώτην καὶ ἐνδύσατε αὐτόν, καὶ δότε δακτύλιον εἰς τὴν χεῖρα αὐτοῦ καὶ ὑποδήματα εἰς τοὺς πόδας,
Orthodox ReadingBut the father said to his servants: «Quickly, bring out the first robeⓘ and clothe him, and give him a ringⓘ on his hand and sandalsⓘ on his feet;

Greekκαὶ φέρετε τὸν μόσχον τὸν σιτευτόν, θύσατε, καὶ φαγόντες εὐφρανθῶμεν,
Orthodox Readingand bring the fattened calfⓘ, slay itⓘ, and eating let us make festivalⓘ,

Greekὅτι οὗτος ὁ υἱός μου νεκρὸς ἦν καὶ ἀνέζησεν, ἦν ἀπολωλὼς καὶ εὑρέθη. καὶ ἤρξαντο εὐφραίνεσθαι.
Orthodox Readingbecause this son of mine was dead and came back to lifeⓘ, was lost and was foundⓘ». And they began to make festival.

GreekἮν δὲ ὁ υἱὸς αὐτοῦ ὁ πρεσβύτερος ἐν ἀγρῷ· καὶ ὡς ἐρχόμενος ἤγγισεν τῇ οἰκίᾳ, ἤκουσεν συμφωνίας καὶ χορῶν,
Orthodox ReadingNow his son, the elder, was in the field; and as, coming, he drew near to the house, he heard music in concert and dancesⓘ.

Greekκαὶ προσκαλεσάμενος ἕνα τῶν παίδων ἐπυνθάνετο τί ἂν εἴη ταῦτα.
Orthodox ReadingAnd, calling one of the servants to himself, he kept inquiringⓘ what these things might be.

Greekὁ δὲ εἶπεν αὐτῷ ὅτι Ὁ ἀδελφός σου ἥκει, καὶ ἔθυσεν ὁ πατήρ σου τὸν μόσχον τὸν σιτευτόν, ὅτι ὑγιαίνοντα αὐτὸν ἀπέλαβεν.
Orthodox ReadingAnd he said to him: «Your brother has come, and your father has slain the fattened calf, because he has him back safe and sound».

Greekὠργίσθη δὲ καὶ οὐκ ἤθελεν εἰσελθεῖν. ὁ δὲ πατὴρ αὐτοῦ ἐξελθὼν παρεκάλει αὐτόν.
Orthodox ReadingBut he grew angry and would not enter; and his father, coming out, pleaded with himⓘ.

Greekὁ δὲ ἀποκριθεὶς εἶπεν τῷ πατρὶ αὐτοῦ· Ἰδοὺ τοσαῦτα ἔτη δουλεύω σοι καὶ οὐδέποτε ἐντολήν σου παρῆλθον, καὶ ἐμοὶ οὐδέποτε ἔδωκας ἔριφον ἵνα μετὰ τῶν φίλων μου εὐφρανθῶ·
Orthodox ReadingBut he, answering, said to the father: «Behold, so many years I serve youⓘ and I never transgressed a commandment, the mitzvah, the precept of the Torahⓘ of yours, and to me you never gave even a young goat to make festival with my friends;

Greekὅτε δὲ ὁ υἱός σου οὗτος ὁ καταφαγών σου τὸν βίον μετὰ πορνῶν ἦλθεν, ἔθυσας αὐτῷ τὸν σιτευτὸν μόσχον.
Orthodox Readingbut when this son of yours came, who has devoured your livelihood with the prostitutes, for him you slew the fattened calf».

Greekὁ δὲ εἶπεν αὐτῷ· Τέκνον, σὺ πάντοτε μετ' ἐμοῦ εἶ, καὶ πάντα τὰ ἐμὰ σά ἐστιν·
Orthodox ReadingBut he said to him: «Childⓘ, you are always with me, and all that is mine is yours;

Greekεὐφρανθῆναι δὲ καὶ χαρῆναι ἔδει, ὅτι ὁ ἀδελφός σου οὗτος νεκρὸς ἦν καὶ ἔζησεν, καὶ ἀπολωλὼς καὶ εὑρέθη.
Orthodox Readingit was needfulⓘ to make festival and to rejoiceⓘ, because this brother of yours was dead and came back to life, was lost and was found».
