41
GreekΕἶπεν δὲ ὁ Πέτρος· Κύριε, πρὸς ἡμᾶς τὴν παραβολὴν ταύτην λέγεις ἢ καὶ πρὸς πάντας;
Orthodox ReadingThen Peter said: «Lord, this parableⓘ do you tell for us or also for everyone?».
42
Greekκαὶ εἶπεν ὁ κύριος· Τίς ἄρα ἐστὶν ὁ πιστὸς οἰκονόμος ὁ φρόνιμος, ὃν καταστήσει ὁ κύριος ἐπὶ τῆς θεραπείας αὐτοῦ τοῦ διδόναι ἐν καιρῷ τὸ σιτομέτριον;
Orthodox ReadingAnd the Lord answered: «Who then is the faithful and wise stewardⓘ, the trusted custodian (ne'eman, נֶאֱמָן), whom the master will appoint over his household servantsⓘ to give at the proper time the portion of grainⓘ, according to the office of the one charged with the just distribution (gabbai, גַּבַּאי)?
43
Orthodox ReadingBlessed is that servantⓘ whom his master, when he comes, will find doing just so.
44
Orthodox ReadingTruly I tell youⓘ: he will set him over all his possessions.
45
Orthodox ReadingBut if that servant says in his heartⓘ: My master delaysⓘ in coming, and begins to beat the menservants and maidservantsⓘ, and to eat and drink and get drunk,
46
Orthodox Readingthe master of that servant will come on a day when he does not expect him and at an hour he does not know — the hour of the reckoning (din, דִּין), the unexpected judgment before the court of Heaven —, and he will cut him in twoⓘ and place his portion together with the unfaithfulⓘ.
47
Orthodox ReadingThat servant then who knewⓘ the will of his master and did not prepare himself nor act according to his will, transgressing as one deliberate (be-mezid, with full knowledge), will be beatenⓘ with many stripes;
48
Orthodox Readingbut he who did not know it, and yet did things deserving of stripes, failing as one inadvertent (bi-shogeg, without knowing), will be beaten with few: the penalty is graduated upon knowledge, according to the halakhic distinction between deliberate fault and inadvertent fault. To whomever was givenⓘ much, much will be requiredⓘ of him — the measure of the gift sets the measure of the account rendered in the world to come (olam ha-ba, עוֹלָם הַבָּא), according to the principle middah ke-neged middah, מִדָּה כְּנֶגֶד מִדָּה; and to him to whom was entrustedⓘ much, all the more will they demand of him».
