GreekΚαὶ ἐγένετο ἐν μιᾷ τῶν ⸀ἡμερῶν διδάσκοντος αὐτοῦ τὸν λαὸν ἐν τῷ ἱερῷ καὶ εὐαγγελιζομένου ἐπέστησαν οἱ ⸀ἀρχιερεῖς καὶ οἱ γραμματεῖς σὺν τοῖς πρεσβυτέροις,
Orthodox ReadingOne day, while he was teaching the people, the am Israelⓘ, in the Templeⓘ and proclaiming the good news, the archiereîs came upon him (the kohanim of the temple summit, the Sadducees (Saddoukaioi)ⓘ), the scribes (the soferim, experts in the Torah close to the Pharisees (perushim)ⓘ) and the elders (the zeqenim, lay heads of householdsⓘ): the three components of the Sanhedrinⓘ.

Greekκαὶ εἶπαν ⸂λέγοντες πρὸς αὐτόν⸃· Εἰπὸν ἡμῖν ἐν ποίᾳ ἐξουσίᾳ ταῦτα ποιεῖς, ἢ τίς ἐστιν ὁ δούς σοι τὴν ἐξουσίαν ταύτην;
Orthodox ReadingAnd they said: «By what authorityⓘ do you do these things, or who gave it to you?».

Greekἀποκριθεὶς δὲ εἶπεν πρὸς αὐτούς· Ἐρωτήσω ὑμᾶς ⸀κἀγὼ λόγον, καὶ εἴπατέ μοι·

GreekΤὸ βάπτισμα Ἰωάννου ἐξ οὐρανοῦ ἦν ἢ ἐξ ἀνθρώπων;

Greekοἱ δὲ συνελογίσαντο πρὸς ἑαυτοὺς λέγοντες ὅτι Ἐὰν εἴπωμεν· Ἐξ οὐρανοῦ, ἐρεῖ· Διὰ τί οὐκ ἐπιστεύσατε αὐτῷ;
Orthodox ReadingThey reasoned: «If we say: From heaven, he will say: Why did you not believe him?

Greekἐὰν δὲ εἴπωμεν· Ἐξ ἀνθρώπων, ⸂ὁ λαὸς ἅπας⸃ καταλιθάσει ἡμᾶς, πεπεισμένος γάρ ἐστιν Ἰωάννην προφήτην εἶναι·
Orthodox ReadingIf we say: From men, the am ha-aretz will stone us, for it holds John to be a prophetⓘ».

GreekἬρξατο δὲ πρὸς τὸν λαὸν λέγειν τὴν παραβολὴν ταύτην· ⸀Ἄνθρωπος ἐφύτευσεν ἀμπελῶνα, καὶ ἐξέδετο αὐτὸν γεωργοῖς, καὶ ἀπεδήμησεν χρόνους ἱκανούς.
Orthodox ReadingThen he began to tell the people this mashalⓘ: «A man planted a vineyard and let it out to tenant farmersⓘ and went away for a long time.

Greek⸀καὶ καιρῷ ἀπέστειλεν πρὸς τοὺς γεωργοὺς δοῦλον, ἵνα ἀπὸ τοῦ καρποῦ τοῦ ἀμπελῶνος ⸀δώσουσιν αὐτῷ· οἱ δὲ γεωργοὶ ⸂ἐξαπέστειλαν αὐτὸν δείραντες⸃ κενόν.
Orthodox ReadingAt the proper time he sent a servant so that they would give him his share of the harvest; but the farmers beat him and sent him away empty-handed.

Greekκαὶ προσέθετο ⸂ἕτερον πέμψαι⸃ δοῦλον· οἱ δὲ κἀκεῖνον δείραντες καὶ ἀτιμάσαντες ἐξαπέστειλαν κενόν.

Greekκαὶ προσέθετο ⸂τρίτον πέμψαι⸃· οἱ δὲ καὶ τοῦτον τραυματίσαντες ἐξέβαλον.

Greekεἶπεν δὲ ὁ κύριος τοῦ ἀμπελῶνος· Τί ποιήσω; πέμψω τὸν υἱόν μου τὸν ἀγαπητόν· ἴσως ⸀τοῦτον ἐντραπήσονται.
Orthodox ReadingThen the owner of the vineyard said: «What shall I do? I will send my son, the belovedⓘ; perhaps they will respect him».

Greekἰδόντες δὲ αὐτὸν οἱ γεωργοὶ διελογίζοντο πρὸς ⸀ἀλλήλους λέγοντες· Οὗτός ἐστιν ὁ κληρονόμος· ⸀ἀποκτείνωμεν αὐτόν, ἵνα ἡμῶν γένηται ἡ κληρονομία·
Orthodox ReadingBut the farmers, when they saw him, reasoned among themselves: «This is the heirⓘ: let us kill him, and the inheritance will be ours».

Greekκαὶ ἐκβαλόντες αὐτὸν ἔξω τοῦ ἀμπελῶνος ἀπέκτειναν. τί οὖν ποιήσει αὐτοῖς ὁ κύριος τοῦ ἀμπελῶνος;
Orthodox ReadingAnd they cast him out of the vineyard and killed him. What then will the owner of the vineyard do to them?

Greekἐλεύσεται καὶ ἀπολέσει τοὺς γεωργοὺς τούτους, καὶ δώσει τὸν ἀμπελῶνα ἄλλοις. ἀκούσαντες δὲ εἶπαν· Μὴ γένοιτο.
Orthodox ReadingHe will come, destroy those farmers and give the vineyard to othersⓘ». Hearing this, they said: «May it never beⓘ!».

Greekὁ δὲ ἐμβλέψας αὐτοῖς εἶπεν· Τί οὖν ἐστιν τὸ γεγραμμένον τοῦτο· Λίθον ὃν ἀπεδοκίμασαν οἱ οἰκοδομοῦντες, οὗτος ἐγενήθη εἰς κεφαλὴν γωνίας;
Orthodox ReadingBut he, looking at them, said: «What then does this mean which stands writtenⓘ: The stone that the builders rejected has become the cornerstoneⓘ?

Greekπᾶς ὁ πεσὼν ἐπ’ ἐκεῖνον τὸν λίθον συνθλασθήσεται· ἐφ’ ὃν δ’ ἂν πέσῃ, λικμήσει αὐτόν.
Orthodox ReadingWhoever falls on that stone will be broken to pieces, and the one on whom it falls will be crushed».

Greekκαὶ ἐζήτησαν οἱ ⸂γραμματεῖς καὶ οἱ ἀρχιερεῖς⸃ ἐπιβαλεῖν ἐπ’ αὐτὸν τὰς χεῖρας ἐν αὐτῇ τῇ ὥρᾳ, καὶ ἐφοβήθησαν ⸂τὸν λαόν⸃, ἔγνωσαν γὰρ ὅτι πρὸς αὐτοὺς ⸂εἶπεν τὴν παραβολὴν ταύτην⸃.
Orthodox ReadingIn that hour the scribes (the soferim) and the archiereîs (the kohanim of the summitⓘ) sought to lay hands on him, but they feared the am ha-aretzⓘ; they had understood that he had told the parable against themⓘ.
