Ἀπελθόντων δὲ τῶν ἀγγέλων Ἰωάννου ἤρξατο λέγειν πρὸς τοὺς ὄχλους περὶ Ἰωάννου· Τί ἐξήλθατε εἰς τὴν ἔρημον θεάσασθαι; κάλαμον ὑπὸ ἀνέμου σαλευόμενον;
Quando gli inviati di Giovanni furono partiti, Gesù si mise a parlare di Giovanni alle folle: «Che cosa siete andati a vedere nel deserto? Una canna sbattuta dal vento?
When the messengers of Johnⓘ had departed, Jesus began to speak to the crowds of am ha-aretzⓘ concerning John: «What did you go out into the wilderness to contemplateⓘ? A fragile reed shaken by the wind?

ἀλλὰ τί ἐξήλθατε ἰδεῖν; ἄνθρωπον ἐν μαλακοῖς ἱματίοις ἠμφιεσμένον; ἰδοὺ οἱ ἐν ἱματισμῷ ἐνδόξῳ καὶ τρυφῇ ὑπάρχοντες ἐν τοῖς βασιλείοις εἰσίν.
Allora, che cosa siete andati a vedere? Un uomo vestito con abiti di lusso? Ecco, quelli che portano vesti sontuose e vivono nel lusso stanno nei palazzi dei re.
But what did you truly go out to see? A man clothed in luxurious soft garmentsⓘ? Behold, those who wear sumptuous garments and live in luxury are in the palaces of kings.

ἀλλὰ τί ἐξήλθατε ἰδεῖν; προφήτην; ναὶ λέγω ὑμῖν, καὶ περισσότερον προφήτου.
Ebbene, che cosa siete andati a vedere? Un profeta? Sì, io vi dico, anzi, più che un profeta.
Then what did you go out to see? A prophetⓘ? Yes, I tell you, and much more than a prophet.

οὗτός ἐστιν περὶ οὗ γέγραπται· Ἰδοὺ ἀποστέλλω τὸν ἄγγελόν μου πρὸ προσώπου σου, ὃς κατασκευάσει τὴν ὁδόν σου ἔμπροσθέν σου.
Egli è colui del quale sta scritto: Ecco, dinanzi a te mando il mio messaggero, davanti a te egli preparerà la tua via.
This is the one of whom it stands writtenⓘ in the Scripture: **Behold, I send my messengerⓘ** before your face, who shall prepare your way before you.

λέγω ὑμῖν, μείζων ἐν γεννητοῖς γυναικῶν Ἰωάννου οὐδείς ἐστιν· ὁ δὲ μικρότερος ἐν τῇ βασιλείᾳ τοῦ θεοῦ μείζων αὐτοῦ ἐστιν.
Io vi dico: fra i nati da donna non vi è alcuno più grande di Giovanni, ma il più piccolo nel regno di Dio è più grande di lui.
I tell you: among those born of woman none is greater than John; yet the least in the Kingdom of Godⓘ is greater than he.

Καὶ πᾶς ὁ λαὸς ἀκούσας καὶ οἱ τελῶναι ἐδικαίωσαν τὸν θεόν, βαπτισθέντες τὸ βάπτισμα Ἰωάννου·
Tutto il popolo che lo ascoltava, e anche i pubblicani, ricevendo il battesimo di Giovanni, hanno riconosciuto che Dio è giusto.
And all the people, the am ha-aretzⓘ, and with them the tax collectors (telonai), the collectors excluded by the observantⓘ, having heard John, rendered justice to God, acknowledging his work, and they had been immersed in the lavacrum of teshuvah, of conversionⓘ of John;

οἱ δὲ Φαρισαῖοι καὶ οἱ νομικοὶ τὴν βουλὴν τοῦ θεοῦ ἠθέτησαν εἰς ἑαυτούς, μὴ βαπτισθέντες ὑπ' αὐτοῦ.
Ma i farisei e i dottori della Legge, non facendosi battezzare da lui, hanno reso vano il disegno di Dio su di loro.
the Pharisees (perushim), the separated observantⓘ, on the other hand, and the teachers of the Torah (soferim), experts of the halakhahⓘ rejected the design of God — the etzah, the divine counselⓘ regarding themselves, not having been immersed by him.

Τίνι οὖν ὁμοιώσω τοὺς ἀνθρώπους τῆς γενεᾶς ταύτης καὶ τίνι εἰσὶν ὅμοιοι;
A chi dunque posso paragonare la gente di questa generazione? A chi è simile?
To whom then shall I liken the men of this generation, and to whom are they alike?

ὅμοιοί εἰσιν παιδίοις τοῖς ἐν ἀγορᾷ καθημένοις καὶ προσφωνοῦσιν ἀλλήλοις λέγοντες· Ηὐλήσαμεν ὑμῖν καὶ οὐκ ὠρχήσασθε, ἐθρηνήσαμεν καὶ οὐκ ἐκλαύσατε.
È simile a bambini che, seduti in piazza, gridano gli uni agli altri così: 'Vi abbiamo suonato il flauto e non avete ballato, abbiamo cantato un lamento e non avete pianto!'.
They are like childrenⓘ seated in the square who call out to one another: We played the flute for you and you did not dance, we intoned a lament and you did not weep.

ἐλήλυθεν γὰρ Ἰωάννης ὁ βαπτιστὴς μὴ ἐσθίων ἄρτον μήτε πίνων οἶνον, καὶ λέγετε· Δαιμόνιον ἔχει.
È venuto infatti Giovanni il Battista, che non mangia pane e non beve vino, e voi dite: 'È indemoniato'.
For John the Baptizer came, in the perpetual fasting of nazirite abstinence, who eats no bread nor drinks wineⓘ, and you say: He has a demonⓘ.

ἐλήλυθεν ὁ υἱὸς τοῦ ἀνθρώπου ἐσθίων καὶ πίνων, καὶ λέγετε· Ἰδοὺ ἄνθρωπος φάγος καὶ οἰνοπότης, φίλος τελωνῶν καὶ ἁμαρτωλῶν.
È venuto il Figlio dell'uomo, che mangia e beve, e voi dite: 'Ecco un mangione e un beone, un amico di pubblicani e di peccatori!'.
The Son of Manⓘ came eating and drinking, and you say: Behold a glutton and a drinker of wine, a friend of tax collectors and sinners.

καὶ ἐδικαιώθη ἡ σοφία ἀπὸ πάντων τῶν τέκνων αὐτῆς.
Ma la Sapienza è stata riconosciuta giusta da tutti i suoi figli».
Yet Wisdomⓘ was acknowledged righteous, was justifiedⓘ by all her children».
