10
And he was teaching in one of the synagogues (bet ha-knesset) on a Shabbat .
11
And behold, a woman who had a spirit of infirmity for eighteen years: she was bent over and could in no way straighten herself fully.
12
Seeing her, Jesus called her to himself and said to her: «Woman, you are loosed from your infirmity» — the verb is the same as for loosing the beast on Shabbat.
13
And he laid his hands upon her, and at once she was straightened and gave glory to God.
14
Then answering, the head of the synagogue (archisynagogos), the one responsible for the liturgical order of the congregation, indignant because Jesus had healed on Shabbat, said to the crowd of the am ha-aretz , the ordinary people assembled: «There are six days on which one must work (perform melakhah) , as the commandment (mitzvah) of the Torah prescribes; on those, then, come and be healed, and not on the Shabbat day».
15
ἀπεκρίθη δὲ αὐτῷ ὁ κύριος καὶ εἶπεν· Ὑποκριταί, ἕκαστος ὑμῶν τῷ σαββάτῳ οὐ λύει τὸν βοῦν αὐτοῦ ἢ τὸν ὄνον ἀπὸ τῆς φάτνης καὶ ἀπαγαγὼν ποτίζει;
The Lord therefore answered him and said: «Hypocrites, does not each of you on Shabbat loose his ox or his donkey from the manger, and lead it away to give it drink?
16
ταύτην δὲ θυγατέρα Ἀβραὰμ οὖσαν, ἣν ἔδησεν ὁ Σατανᾶς ἰδοὺ δέκα καὶ ὀκτὼ ἔτη, οὐκ ἔδει λυθῆναι ἀπὸ τοῦ δεσμοῦ τούτου τῇ ἡμέρᾳ τοῦ σαββάτου;
And this woman, who is a daughter of Abraham (bat Avraham), belonging to the people of the covenant and not a stranger, whom Satan had bound, behold, for eighteen years, ought she not to be loosed from this bond on the Shabbat day?» — the a fortiori reasoning (qal wa-chomer) moves from the light case, the watered beast, to the grave one: this work of covenant mercy (chesed) which restores a daughter of Abraham honors the rest, it does not profane it.
17
And while he was saying these things, all his adversaries were put to shame, and the whole crowd rejoiced at all the glorious things done by him.
